The Garena Young Lions will host Balestier Khalsa FC at Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday night (22 June) in their first game of the Great Eastern-Hyundai S.League after the international break.

Several of the Young Lions players were busy over the break, having been called up to the both the ‘A’ as well as Under-22 National Teams for various matches.

The U22s travelled to Doha, Qatar for a training camp last week where they played two matches against their Qatari counterparts in preparation for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in August.

They lost 3-0 and 2-0 to Qatar, the 2016 Asian Football Confederation Under-22 Championships semi-finalists.

Though missing key players for the fixture against the Tigers, including captain Shahrin Saberin, Joshua Pereira, and Muhaimin Suhaimi, Head Coach Richard Tardy is optimistic about his charges’ chances in his third game with the squad.

“We know it will be difficult without some of our key players but we will be doing our best to win our first game this season,” said Coach Tardy.

On his opponents, he commented: “Balestier has two Under-22 National Team players in their squad, Jonathan Tan and Hanafi Akbar. It will be interesting to see the Young Lions playing against their teammates in the Under-22 side.”

The Garena Young Lions have also secured the services of Singapore-born Armin Maier, who was scouted for the Under-20s led by Fandi Ahmad earlier this year, at the close of the S.League transfer window. However, Maier will likely only make his S.League debut in September due to injury and the Young Lions’ break from the S.League as they prepare for the SEA Games.

The match against Balestier Khalsa FC will kick off at 8.30pm at Jalan Besar Stadium.
